People who come to your home..

Have you guys ever really thought about the people who you willingly open your front door for? We had someone from the water company come today to take a look at the meter and he had to come inside. Before he got here I got to thinking.... how do I really know he works for the water company? I can ask for I.D. etc but do I really know what their I.D. looks like? My babies are in this house and I can't help but think there has got to be some people who have been hurt by so called handy men who come to your home to give you a quote or estimate or fix something.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think I am a big wuss but push come to shove and chances are I am going to lose a fight unless I have my trusted friend Smith & Wesson *wink* with me. Are there any safety books about this sort of thing? What do you guys think?

We had a segment on the news about this not too long ago and they said that they encourage you to ask for ID especialy if you didn't call and request a repair, etc. and you aren't expecting them. They also said that you can call the company and ask if they sent a service rep to your house. Most "handymen" will completely understand and wait for you to get conformation. I've never had to do it myself, but if I didn't feel right about about someone, I'd defintely check first.

I once had to call the plumber and these two young guys showed up with baggy pants, underwear hanging out, etc. They looked like gang members, not plumbers! I was freaked out to let them in, so I did ask for ID. Turns out they really were the plumbers for the company I had called and they fixed the problem really fast. I think they could have tidied up their appearances, though.

I agreee with te two comments already. IF you didn't call and someone just shows up don't open the door.

Then ask for ID and YOU go find teh number for the place they work for.

Also In my house I installed these on all exterior doors. MUCH better then a chain:
